The Laurentian - Research Vessel

R/V Laurentian at GLERL's Lake Michigan Field Station

The R/V Laurentian is an 80-foot steel-hulled vessel that was built in 1974 for use by the University of Michigan’s Great Lakes Research Division. In 2002, a partnership agreement between GLERL and the U-M provided for a 15-year lease, whereby GLERL assumed responsibility for the vessel’s operation, maintenance and scheduling of ship time. While the ship now primarily supports GLERL’s Great Lakes research missions, the agreement also offers vessel access and support to University of Michigan scientists.

The Laurentian operates from April to November and averages 75 operational days in a calendar year. The ship allows GLERL scientists to collect water samples and other data on the Great Lakes but can be made available to other researchers, time and cost permitting. The 480 square feet of wet and dry labs contain onboard water supplies and basic lab equipment for processing chemical, physical, and biological samples. On deck, the ship has an assortment of cranes and winches for deploying instruments and sampling gear including, CTD’s and BT’s, niskin bottles, corers, grabs, and a sidescan sonar.

The Shenehon - Research Vessel

R/V Shenehon

The R/V Shenehon is a 65-foot, steel-hulled vessel built in 1953 for river transport of troops and supplies during the Korean War. However, the vessel never saw such active duty and was later operated by the Army Corps of Engineers Lake Survey Center, based in Detroit, Michigan, before the ship’s eventual transfer to GLERL. It is currently based in Lake Huron at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve where it will serve both Sanctuary and GLERL activities.

The Shenehon operates between March and December, which in 2001, totaled 110 days. The ship allows GLERL scientists to collect water samples and other data on the Great Lakes but can be made available to other researchers, time and cost permitting. A 110 square foot lab contains onboard water supplies and basic lab instruments and equipment for processing physical, chemical and biological samples. On deck, the ship has an assortment of cranes and winches for deploying instruments and sampling gear including, trawls and plankton nets, CTDs and BTs, Niskin Bottles / rosettes, corers and grabs.
