The FBI today announced additional
security measures for FBI Headquarters and other FBI locations.
On several occasions over the
last five years in response to growing general security concerns
the FBI has instituted numerous security procedures at FBI Headquarters.
These include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Vehicular curbside parking on
the streets adjoining FBI Headquarters has been eliminated.
- Placement of concrete security
structures around the building.
- Closing the courtyard area to
unescorted visitors and tourists taking the FBI Tour.
- All persons entering the FBI
Tour must pass through a magnetometer, have all items carried
thoroughly screened and are escorted while on the tour.
- Packages, mail and baggage entering
FBI Headquarters are appropriately screened using x-ray machines
or explosives detection canines, and, in some cases, physically
searched.
- Visitors to FBI Headquarters
must display photo identification, pass through a magnetometer,
have packages screened and be escorted at all times while in
FBI space.
- Vehicles entering FBI Headquarters
space are subject to search and are physically inspected prior
to entry.
- FBI police presence both inside
and on the exterior of FBI Headquarters has been increased.
- Security at FBI Headquarters'
public and "employee only" entrances has been substantially
increased.
Based on recommendations received
yesterday from the Crime Subcommittee of the House Judiciary
Committee, the FBI has implemented the following additional procedures:
- Non-FBI law enforcement officers,
who do not have approved access clearance, will be required to
surrender their weapons to FBI security personnel prior to entering
FBI Headquarters' space.
- Positive identification of visitor
security protocols have been supplemented.
- Except for visitors taking the
popular FBI Tour, all visitors to FBI Headquarters must have
verified sponsorship of an authorized on-board employee prior
to entry into FBI space.
The safety of visitors to FBI
Headquarters, as well as the safety of FBI employees and the
general public, remains paramount. The inconveniences caused
by these necessary procedures are regrettably unavoidable.
No specific threat gives rise
to this announcement today. The FBI appreciates the congressional
focus on this important issue.
The above list of security procedures
is not intended to be all-inclusive. Other sensitive procedures
and equipment are deployed as well.
