Statement of FBI Director Louis
J. Freeh Regarding the Recent Waco Findings by Special Counsel/Senator
John Danforth:
All of us in the FBI welcomed the appointment of a Special Counsel
in the Waco matter in hopes of once and for all answering what
Senator Danforth labeled the "dark questions." Now,
for the second time in less than two weeks, a rigorous independent
examination of the facts has found overwhelmingly in the government's
favor.
The simple truth, as the FBI has maintained since April 19, 1993,
has been unmistakingly confirmed again today--the FBI fired no
shots on that day and the Davidians started the fires that ultimately
engulfed the compound. As was heard during the final days of
the civil trial, and as Senator Danforth specifically noted,
Agents risked their lives trying to save those in the compound
when the fires began and conducted themselves with the proper
motives throughout.
As I stated last week, seven years of absorbing unproven allegations
and unfounded criticisms has levied a heavy burden on the Agents
who were at Waco and their families as well. Like the jury findings,
this report brings great solace to them in that its findings
reaffirm that which we have always believed --they did their
best and for all the right reasons. There were no ill motives,
as Senator Danforth found.
This report reflects what we have experienced, that is, the inquiry
by Senator Danforth has been both vigorous and thorough. This
kind of public recitation of the complete facts can only serve
to support the long term best interests of the FBI and our desire
to be fully accountable to the American people.
As Senator Danforth continues his inquiry, the FBI will do all
within its power to assist him in resolving the remaining issues.
We are reacting to what he has found and, in the end, want no
doubts to remain when the final report is issued. I have great
confidence Senator Danforth will accomplish just that.
