FBI's
Ten Most Wanted Fugitives - James J. Bulger
The Federal Bureau of Investigation
today announced that a reward of up to $1 million is being offered
for information leading to the arrest of James J. Bulger, one
of the FBI's
"Ten Most Wanted Fugitives". The increased reward money
follows additional charges in the form of a superseding racketeering
indictment returned against Bulger by the United States Attorney's
Office in Boston, Massachusetts. This indictment, handed down
on September 28, 2000, charges Bulger for his role in numerous
murders relating to his leadership of an organized crime group
that controlled extortion, drug deals, and other illegal activities
in the Boston area from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s.
In the indictment, Bulger is
specifically charged with participating in the murders of 18
individuals as part of his racketeering activities. He is thought
to have promoted and protected his criminal ventures by engaging
in extensive and violent efforts to obstruct justice. Bulger
faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and maximum fines
of
up to $3,500,000. He also faces criminal forfeiture of $10 million
in assets. Bulger has been a fugitive since his disappearance
in 1995.
As a result of this new information,
the FBI is issuing a new Top Ten wanted poster of Bulger. This
poster reflects the increased reward money and provides the American
public with new information on Bulger. Introduced on this poster
is a new photograph of Bulger, taken in 1994 just before his
disappearance, as well as the new alias Mark Shapeton, thought
to have been used by Bulger. The updated charges against Bulger,
most of which are based on the federal racketeering indictment,
are also included.
The FBI placed James J. Bulger
