DIRECTOR ROBERT MUELLER ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER

WASHINGTON, D.C. – FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III, announced the appointment of Zalmai Azmi to the position of Chief Information Officer (CIO).

Mr. Azmi has been serving as CIO in an acting capacity for the past six months. As CIO, Mr. Azmi is responsible for the FBI's overall information technology efforts, including developing our IT strategic plan and operating budget; developing and maintaining the FBI's technology assets; and providing technical direction for the re?engineering of FBI business processes.

Director Mueller said, “Zal will provide the centralized management and vision that are critical to the success of our current and future information technology upgrades. He will ensure that the FBI’s IT is on the cutting-edge and that we have the business processes in place to take full advantage of the tools available.”

Prior to his appointment as Acting CIO in late 2003, Mr. Azmi worked at the Department of Justice as the CIO for the Executive Office for United States Attorneys, where he devised and implemented a multi-year strategic technology plan for United States Attorneys’ Offices. He also worked as a computer scientist at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to entering federal government service, Mr. Azmi served with the United States Marine Corps in communications and military intelligence.
