DEFENDANT CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLING NEARLY $669,000 IN FUNDS

Marcos Daniel Jiménez, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; and Michael S. Clemens, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today that defendant, Lillie Mae Xavier, was charged in a one (1) count Information with embezzling funds from a health care benefit program, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 669.

The Information charges Xavier with committing embezzlement as an employee of Cigna Dental Health Inc. in Plantation, Florida during the period September 30, 1999 through November 18, 2003. The Information also alleges that Xavier had access to bank accounts of Cigna Dental Health Inc. and used computer/internet wire transfers of Cigna bank account funds to complete the scheme. Xavier, according to the Information, embezzled approximately $668,062.57 in funds.

If convicted on the aforementioned count, Xavier faces a statutory maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years and a fine of up to $250,000.

Mr. Jiménez commended the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jeffrey H. Kay.
