JURY FINDS DEFENDANT GUILTY
OF ATTEMPTED ONLINE ENTICEMENT OF A CHILD

Marcos Daniel Jiménez, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida and William T. Sims, Special Agent in Charge, United States Secret Service, announced today that Andres Rojas, of Hialeah Gardens, was convicted after a two-day jury trial of one count of attempted on-line enticement of a child in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2422(b). Rojas was charged with having used the Internet to arrange a sexual encounter with someone he thought was a 13-year old girl.

Barroso faces a mandatory minimum statutory penalty of five (5) years’ imprisonment and a maximum statutory sentence of 30 years’ imprisonment.

According to the evidence presented at trial, Rojas, on multiple occasions in late 2003 and early 2004, used the Internet to contact someone he thought was a 13-year old girl, but who turned out to be an undercover Secret Service Special Agent. Rojas engaged the undercover agent in sexually explicit Internet chats. During these chats, Rojas repeatedly expressed his desire to meet this person he thought was a 13-year old girl in order to engage in oral sex. On January 8, 2004, he showed up at the meeting place that he and the person he thought was a 13-year old girl had agreed upon, at which time he was arrested by agents of the United States Secret Service.

Mr. Jiménez commended the investigative efforts of the United States Secret Service and the Miami Electronic Crimes Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew Axelrod and Gerald Greenberg.
