U.S. Census Bureau

Births

The U.S. Census Bureau is not the primary source for data on births.

The primary source is the NATIONAL CENTER FOR HEALTH STATISTICS (NCHS). They can provide information on total births, births by race and sex, out of wedlock childbearing, etc. For numbers of births look under "Publications Printed" for recent years. They have data at state and county levels.

Their phone number is 301-458-4636.

For a current socioeconomic profile of women who have had a birth in 1994, see the Fertility section under Subjects A to Z.

The U.S. Bureau of the Census does use births collected from NCHS and from state departments of vital statistics in our population estimates and projections programs. We present births in some of our estimates and projections products located on the Internet and in other formats.

The births presented in these products have been modified by our estimates and projections procedures, and therefore will differ from the annual births released in NCHS products.
