Free Courses for Engineering and Architectural Faculty
The 2004 MBDSI has been cancelled due to low enrollment.
One of the central missions of the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) is protection of the public from natural and man-made
hazards. FEMA provides technical assistance to design professionals
on proper approaches to mitigate the effects of wind, flood, earthquakes.
In addition, the MBDSI will address dam safety design issues. The
Multihazard Building Design Summer Institute (MBDSI) was developed
by FEMA in 1973, to help meet these needs. The Institute is designed
to provide instructional tools to support engineering and architectural
professors in conducting building design courses. Sessions will
address state-of-the-art design research and applications to protect
buildings against various hazards. There will be no charge for registration,
tuition, or text books. Partial funding for travel expenses will
be available to most participants. All reimbursements will be made
according to the government travel standards. Campus housing will
be provided at no cost to most participants. Participants will be
responsible for paying for their own meals in the campus dining
hall.
The
MBDSI will be conducted July 19 through 21, 2004 at FEMA's Emergency
Management Institute. The EMI campus is located a few miles south
of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on U.S. 15, 75 miles north or Washington,
D.C., and 70 miles northwest of Baltimore, Maryland. Two courses
will be conducted concurrently each week. Applicants should be full-time
engineering or architectural faculty at a 4-year institution. Slots
not filled by full-time faculty will be made available to part-time
faculty and practitioners. The final selection of participants may
be determined based on a number of factors including: geographical
representation; equal distribution among universities/colleges;
representation from minority institutions. Please contact the course
manager (below) for more information. To apply for the MBDSI, you
need to print out the 75-5
application form and complete it using the following course
