Mr. Schiff:
There's illegal bookmaking going on in the Springfield, Massachusetts,
area, and the FBI is on the lookout...
Mr.
O'Reilly: "It's a blue collar town. There's a lot of gambling
on sports, historically."
Mr. Schiff:
That's Special Agent Michael O'Reilly, chief of the FBI's office
in Springfield...
Mr.
O'Reilly: "The organized crime faction in Springfield is
the Genovese crime family which has its ties directly back down
to New York City."
Mr. Schiff:
O'Reilly says one man was a barber and a bookie...
Mr.
O'Reilly: "People would make payoffs in the barber shop.
He would take phone calls at the barber shop related to the gambling
operation."
Mr. Schiff:
O'Reilly says gamblers, using code names, called telephones at
the shop to place their bets...
Mr.
O'Reilly: "Weekly they have to come by and make their payoffs
in the barber shop to this particular barber who was actually
in charge of one particular aspect of the gambling operation."
Mr. Schiff:
The barber pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three-and-a-half
years in prison, ordered to forfeit more than $750,000 and was
fined $7,500. I'm Neal Schiff and that's the FBI's Closed Case
of the Week."
