Mr. Schiff:
Public corruption in a small northern New Jersey city. The FBI
investigated and found illegal payments to a contractor. Special
Agent Mike Doyle in the FBI's Newark office says some city leaders
paid the price, including the Town Administrator, who was indicted
for accepting bribes...
Mr.
Doyle: "In the amounts of $30,000 in cash and several, tens
of thousands of dollars, for home construction. So he was indicted
for Corruption charges and sentenced to three-years in prison."
Mr. Schiff:
Doyle says a city commissioner helped the FBI gather evidence;
he got only six-months in prison...
Mr.
Doyle: "He was also convicted and plead guilty to Corruption
charges of accepting work on his home and cash bribes."
Mr. Schiff:
Doyle says the town's Purchasing Agent was give a two-year sentence...
Mr.
Doyle: "He also plead guilty but was not cooperative in the
matter. And the Deputy Director of Public Safety had very little
jail time but was convicted of insurance fraud."
Mr. Schiff:
FBI Agents found that about $2.5 million was illegally paid over
a 5-year period to a contractor who didn't do what he was paid
to do. I'm Neal Schiff and that's the FBI's Closed Case of the
Week."
