Merchants of Terror- I
Listen with Realplayer

Mr. Schiff: Two people attending a Grateful Dead concert in 1985 in Wisconsin were kidnaped and taken to Chicago. FBI Special Agent Ross Rice in Chicago says the kidnapers were called the "Merchants of Terror" by a federal prosecutor because of their alleged involvement in kidnappings, beatings and extortions...

Mr. Rice: "Two of their fans, who were from the San Francisco area, been following the band, and they found themselves kidnaped at gunpoint in the parking lot after the show."

Mr. Schiff: Rice says they were put in a van...

Mr. Rice: "They were then chained in the basement of a residence in a southern suburb of Chicago that belonged to the leader of a motorcycle gang that also sold drugs."

Mr. Schiff: One of the victims escaped, ran out screaming for help. The police came and called the FBI because this was an interstate kidnaping case. Rice says the victims were targets by the group...

Mr. Rice: "They had been tracking, or attempting to track, the two kidnaped victims, for several months in an attempt to collect outstanding drug debts."

Mr. Schiff: All the subjects were sentenced to long prison terms. I'm Neal Schiff and that's the FBI's Closed Case of the Week."
