John S. Pistole - Deputy Director of the FBI

John S. Pistole began his career as a Special Agent with the FBI in 1983. He was initially assigned to the Minneapolis Division where he investigated Organized Crime and Violent Crimes. In 1985, SA Pistole was transferred to the New York Division where he investigated Organized Crime matters focusing on two La Cosa Nostra (LCN) Families. In 1990, he was promoted to a Supervisor in the Organized Crime Section at FBIHQ, handling LCN and Italian Oorganized Crime matters. During this tenure, he coordinated FBI investigative response and assistance to the Italian National Police in their investigations into the assassinations of two prominent Magistrates.

In 1994, Mr. Pistole was promoted to field supervisor of a White Collar Crime and Civil Rights squad in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he also had oversight for all FBI investigations in the Muncie, Indiana, Resident Agency. He was the Division's Undercover Coordinator as well. During this time, he developed curricula and provided instruction at the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary, at the first two sessions (1995) and again in 1996. He was the FBI representative to a State Department delegation sent to Sofia, Bulgaria, assessing their laws and police response to Russian/Eurasian Organized Crime and Financial Crimes.

In 1999, Mr. Pistole was promoted to the position of Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Boston, Massachusetts. He had responsibility for eight supervisors, over 100 Special Agents and support employees within the White Collar Crime, Civil Rights, and the National Infrastructure Protection Computer Intrusion Programs, coupled with oversight for all violations in the states of Maine and New Hampshire and a White Collar Crime squad in Providence, Rhode Island. In 2001, he directed the "Blue Team" of the Information Security Working Group, addressing security issues following the arrest of Robert Hanssen. In July of 2001, he was promoted to the position of Inspector in the Inspection Division at FBIHQ where he led teams conducting evaluations and audits of FBI field offices and HQ Divisions.

In April 2002, Director Mueller appointed Mr. Pistole to the position of Deputy Assistant Director, Counterterrorism Division. In this position, he had oversight for four Operational Sections (International Terrorism Operations Sections I and II, Domestic Terrorism, and the Terrorism Financing Operations Section). He was also responsible for the National Joint Terrorism Task Force at FBIHQ, the Foreign Terrorist Tracking Task Force, and the Terrorism Reports and Requirements Section.

In September 2003, Director Mueller appointed Mr. Pistole to the position of Assistant Director, Counterterrorism Division. On December 19, 2003, he was appointed to serve as the Executive Assistant Director for Counterterrorism and Counterintelligence.

On August 24, 2004, Director Mueller announced the appointment of Mr. Pistole as the next Deputy Director and Mr. Pistole assumed this position on October 1, 2004.

Mr. Pistole practiced law for two years prior to joining the FBI. He is married and has two daughters.
