Community Outreach Program, FBI

Field Office Highlights - Denver

The Denver Field Office Community Outreach Program (COP) was involved in many community programs during the last year, including the Junior Special Agents Program, the FBI Citizens' Academy, the Native Vision Sports Camp, and the Colorado Missing Children Project, among other things.

Junior Special Agent Program

The Denver Division hosts a Junior Special Agent (JSA) Program at Cole Middle School in Denver, Colorado. The program focuses on the history of the FBI and its mission. The JSA Program also teaches citizenship, and how to make the right choices, as well as drug, gang, and crime prevention.

Citizens' Academy

A program offered by the Denver COP includes the Citizens' FBI Academy. This successful six-week program outlines the mission of the FBI and highlights the Denver Division investigative priorities. The Division will hold its third Citizens' Academy this spring. We are planning to hold a second Citizens' Academy in the near future.

Native Vision Sports Camp

The Native Vision Sports Camp is held at the Wind River Indian Reservation in Lander, Wyoming. It offers a national model of a corporate and private partnership to help some of America's neediest and most under-served children. The program's goals are to increase students' aspirations for higher education; to renew family participation in Native youth's academic and extracurricular activities; to promote fitness; and to fortify the determination of youths to resist pressure to abuse substances, join gangs, or fall into delinquent behavior. The FBI participated in the Native Vision Camp by handing out publications about drugs, gangs, and crime prevention. The Denver Division also gave an overview of the FBI at a computer training class.

SAC Community Awards

This award program was created to recognize unsung heros of our Colorado and Wyoming communities. Nominations are received from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, community groups, victim service providers, and state and/or local government officials throughout Colorado and Wyoming. The awards are given in four categories: Youth Service, Lifetime Achievement, Outstanding Community Service, and Outstanding Young Citizen.

Take Our Children to Work Day

This program focuses on exposing the children of the employees to alternative career opportunities. Each year a multi-agency committee provides workshops for the children in alternative careers and financial management. Annually, approximately 100 children attend this event.

Colorado Missing Children Project

The Missing Children Project, which consists of members from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Adams County Sheriff's Department, the Vector Foundation, and the FBI, is working to raise public awareness of the fact that nearly 20,000 children are reported missing in Colorado each year. This committee works to raise awareness of the project by making school presentations and sponsoring essay and poster contests, in addition to finding children who are reported missing.

Presentations

The Special Agent in Charge (SAC), Assistant Special Agents in Charge (ASACs), Community Outreach Specialist, Special Agents, and professional support employees in Denver, Colorado, and Wyoming resident agencies regularly give FBI informational and prevention presentations upon request to school systems, community organizations, and businesses throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. These presentations are well-received and generate additional requests for presentations from the community.

Adopt-A-Family and Christmas Food Drive

During the Christmas holiday season, the employees of the Denver FBI purchase holiday dinners for low income families and presents for the children. This year the Denver office will adopt two Head Start classes and donate to the Volunteers of America's Meals-on-Wheels Program serving the elderly.

Children's Hospital

Denver Office employees annually visit the Denver Children's Hospital. The employees donate FBI basecaps to each child and sing holiday songs for the patients.
