Director's Community
Leadership Award
- Albany Division has sought to recognize the achievements of individuals/organizations
who contribute to the community in the areas of drug awareness and crime
prevention each year since 1994. The 2001 recipient of the Director's
Community Leadership Award was Ron "Cook" Barrett who is the
Gang Prevention Coordinator for the City of Albany Department of Youth
and Recreational Services.
Adopt-A-School
Program - Albany began a Literacy Club/Mentoring Program at School
18 in Albany in Fall, 2001. Twelve FBI employees volunteer one hour
each week to visit and work with their assigned second or third grade
"reading buddy." In addition to improving reading and academic
skills, the volunteers seek to develop a positive, trusting relationship
and support the student in making good personal choices.
Citizens' FBI
Academy - Albany Division graduated 19 business and community leaders
at its first Citizens' FBI Academy in Fall 2000. Participants were given
information on a wide variety of topics as well as the opportunity for
hands on activities. The Fall 2001 Academy was cancelled due to investigative
priorities and will most likely not be held until Fall, 2002.
Boys and Girls
Club of America - Albany Division partnered with the Boys and Girls
Club of Albany and the local chapter of the Shriners, for a Health and
Safety Day for Albany inner city neighborhood youth. The full day of
events and activities featured free fingerprinting and videotape identification
for children's safety packets.
Teammates for
Life Program -The Teammates for Life Program has been an ongoing
anti-drug initiative since 1991. It is estimated that more than 14,000
parents and children attended a full day of demonstrations, events and
clinics in Binghamton in Summer 2001, as the community came together
to provide a drug free message to the city's youth. Consideration is
being given to bringing the concept back to the City of Albany in Summer,
2002.
