American Indian Tribal Census Tract
Outline Maps (Census 2000)

These large format maps (36" x 33") show the boundaries and numbers of the American Indian tribal census tracts as well as the named features underlying those boundaries for American Indian reservations and off-reservation trust lands. The scale of the maps has been optimized to keep the number of map sheets for each area to a minimum, but the scale and number of sheets will vary by the area size of the American Indian reservation/off-reservation trust land, and the complexity of the associated tribal census tracts.

American Indian tribal census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a federally recognized American Indian reservation/off-reservation trust land. The difference between a tribal census tract and a standard census tract is in the hierarchical presentation of the data. In data summaries that are presented for the entire United States, such as the final national Summary files, the Census Bureau includes an American Indian geographic hierarchy.

In this hierarchy, data are presented for tribal census tracts without regard to county and state boundaries and respecting the boundaries of the American Indian reservation/off-reservation trust land. As a result, a census tract that crosses the boundary of an American Indian reservation in the standard geographic hierarchy may have a different population and housing unit count than is presented for what appears to be the same tribal census tract number in the American Indian hierarchy. The Tribal Census Tract Outline Maps show the boundaries for the tribal census tracts that correspond to the data in these special presentations.
