FBI Intelligence Program

The mission of the Intelligence Program is to optimally position the FBI to meet current and emerging national security and criminal threats by:

  • aiming core investigative work proactively against threats to U.S. interests,
  • building and sustaining enterprise-wide intelligence policies and capabilities,
  • and providing useful, appropriate, and timely information and analysis to the national security, homeland security and law enforcement communties.

Field Intelligence Group (FIG)

The ability of FBI Special Agents and Professional Support employees to collect information – whether through physical surveillance, electronic surveillance, or human source development – represents one of our greatest weapons in the war on terror. The Houston Division Field Intelligence Group (FIG) -- staffed by approximately 100 individuals -- is tasked with managing, executing, and coordinating the intelligence functions within the FBI office in Houston and the 40 county Division territory.

FIG analytical reports such as bulletins and assessments are shared with other governmental agencies as appropriate. This round the clock collaborative analytical reporting places the FBI Houston FIG at the forefront of intelligence and evidence analysis. Since the attacks of September 11, the cultural and operational wall between the FBI and CIA has also been broken down, with the two agencies becoming integrated at virtually every level of operation.  Coordination and information sharing between the law enforcement community and intelligence agencies have been greatly improved as a result of the PATRIOT Act and a federal court decision in November 2002 which broke down what had been known as “the Wall” that legally separated law enforcement and intelligence functions.

Quote from the Executive Assistant Director for Intelligence

"Intelligence has proven to be a powerful tool to help focus and strengthen FBI investigations.  Our Special Agents and Intelligence Analysts have demonstrated they are second to none in identifying and reporting threats to our Homeland.  As we conduct our investigative mission, we produce unique and valuable information that, when shared with the larger national security and law enforcement communities, make our nation safer.  The Intelligence Program will ensure that field and headquarters intelligence work is conducted consistently across the FBI."
