FBI Interns

Houston's Non-Paid Intern Program (NPIP)

Since its inception in 1995, the Non-Paid Intern Program (NPIP) of FBI Houston has provided real-world experience in law enforcement to 71 talented college students. Hailing from a diverse spectrum of personal and educational backgrounds, these students have spent countless hours with FBI Special Agents and support personnel, participating real-time in investigations, trial preparation and other tasks of the Bureau.

Program Benefits of being an FBI Houston Intern

The NPIP gives students the true experience of the day-to-day work of the FBI. Interns get an inside look at how the Agency operates, the investigations conducted and the methods used, while earning academic credit. Interns work side-by-side with the men and women who make things happen in the FBI. Internship at FBI Houston is more than just “seeing” it is also “doing.” It is an opportunity to embrace the challenge of working for the Nation’s top Law Enforcement Organization.

Former Interns

After completing the NPIP at FBI Houston, Interns return to their respective colleges to complete requirements for graduation. Former Interns have graduated into many different avenues, some of which include:

  • Law School
  • Graduate School
  • Employment at other Law Enforcement Agencies
  • FBI Support Positions
  • FBI Special Agents

FBI Houston has had Interns from several schools, including:

  • Texas A&M University
  • Prairie View A&M University
  • Sam Houston State University
  • University of Houston

Application Process

Planning is essential to being selected for the NPIP at FBI Houston, because the process takes several months.  The NPIP application process begins with a visit to your college or department Internship Coordinator. Internship Coordinators then refer candidates to FBI Houston for a preliminary interview.

Once selected, Interns must undergo a rigorous background investigation for security clearance. The process includes an in-depth interview, polygraph examination, drug screening, fingerprint check and interviews of family, friends and associates.

The background investigation must deem candidates capable of attaining a Top-Secret Security Clearance before they are accepted at the FBI.

Interns work at FBI Houston throughout the year, earning academic credit during the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. Students considering applying should plan ahead and begin the application process at least six to eight months prior to their desired starting date.

Intern Applicant Requirements

To qualify for the NPIP at FBI Houston, students must be enrolled at a College or University cooperating with the FBI Houston Division.

Additionally, to be considered, Interns must meet the following requirements:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Successful completion of drug test, polygraph examination and background investigation
  • Must be in Junior or Senior year and/or Graduate Program
  • Must be recommended by Professor or Dean
