The Council for Excellence in Government is sponsoring this initiative to connect citizens; first responders; volunteer and civic organizations; businesses; federal, state, and local government officials; and academic representatives to focus on citizens' concerns and recommendations about U.S. homeland security. Third Annual Government Convention on Emerging Technologies: Partnerships for Homeland SecurityThird Annual Government Convention on Emerging Technologies: Partnerships for Homeland Security
January 7–9, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada
This convention will serve as a forum for members of federal, state, and local governments and representatives of the private sector to collaborate on and experiment with information technology solutions that address homeland security needs. It will focus on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Terrorist Threat Integration Center, a new presidential counter-terrorism initiative. The event will also feature TERROREX 04, an interactive, live-threat simulation exercise that will showcase tools from the crisis management test bed.

Emergency Response: Integrating the Response
January 7–9, 2004 in Long Beach, California
Emergency Response will focus on how land, air, and marine emergency organizations can better integrate their responses to major incidents and manage new missions imposed by increased homeland security concerns. Topics include imaging aids for first responders; prioritizing, treating, and transporting mass casualty victims; and responding to the use of biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosive devices. Transportation Research Board's (TRB) 83rd Annual Meeting
January 11, 2004 in Washington, D.C.
This year's TRB annual meeting addresses all transportation modes and offers sessions of interest to policymakers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives from government, industry, and academic institutions. Seminar on Terrorism and Explosives (SEMTEX)
January 13–15, 2004 in Wichita, Kansas
The Regional Community Policing Training Institute at Wichita State University is hosting this event to train transportation industry personnel, security officials, and law enforcement officers in trends in terrorists' use of explosives, explosives detection and countermeasures, and crisis management and bomb threat response. Sponsored by the Institute for Defense and Government Advancement, this 3-day conference will focus on the conceptual framework, experimentation, technology, and war-fighter perspectives and lessons learned from recent operations. NCW 2004 will bring together leading military strategists to discuss their perspectives on how best to incorporate and exploit the advantages gained from network-centric operations.

ASLET's 17th Annual International Training Conference & Law Enforcement Exposition
January 20–24, 2004 in St. Louis, Missouri
Conducted by the American Society for Law Enforcement Training, this conference includes tracks on firearms, instructional development, management supervision, survival learning research, specialized tactical response, and use of force. Weapons of Mass Destruction Conference 2004: Managing Global Threats Through Preparation, Vigilance, Communication, and Response
January 22–28, 2004 in Tampa, Florida
This conference addresses both crisis and consequence management (i.e., hazard planning and decisionmaking skills) at the local, state, and federal levels during incidents involving weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The event will provide education and training for emergency first responders, healthcare providers, and all who manage incidents involving WMD.

Reporting on Terrorism: the News Media and Public Health
January 30 and 31, 2004 in New York, New York
This seminar is designed to help top news executives think through and prepare for the consequences of a bioterrorism event. Seminar participants will hear dialogue based on a "what if" case study and participate in a number of panels and discussions with public health clinicians and practitioners, law enforcement officials, and journalists. Dentistry's Response to Bioterrorism
