Max Horkheimer was born on April 14, 1881, in Poland. He entered the United States on October 14, 1937. Horkheimer was the Director of the International Institute of Social Research in New York City, which was located on the campus of Columbia University. This institute was originally at the University of Frankfurt, but it was closed by the Nazi government in 1933.
