Marion Anderson, born February 27, 1902, in Philadelphia, PA was the subject of a Special Inquiry investigation, prior to her possible appointment by the President to a position at the Department of State. Ms. Anderson, known for her musical talents, began her singing career in 1924, touring the United States and Europe. Ms. Anderson was awarded Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music from Howard University on June 10, 1938, from Temple University in June 1941, and Smith College in June 1944.
