Gary Cooper, real name Frank James Cooper, was a motion picture star born May 7, 1901, in Helena, Montana. A newspaper published in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1947 reported a speech supposedly made by the actor in which he was said to have praised the American Communist Party. The Daily Worker, an East Coast Communist newspaper published an article stating "Press Agent Hoax in Brazil Makes Hero of Wrong Actor." The article said that this was a cheap trick to get the people to see his films - to take their money under false pretenses. The November 1951 issue of the bulletin "Counterattack" contained an article stating that for years Gary Cooper was prominent in the motion picture alliance for the preservation of American ideals which have led the fight against Communist infiltration in Hollywood. His house was burglarized on several different occasions and the loss was several thousands of dollars each time. He was also the target of several extortion attempts.
