The US Navy, one of the four military services in the Department of Defense, mission is to maintain,
train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining
freedom of the seas. An integral part of the Navy mission is Naval Intelligence. Established in 1882,
Naval Intelligence is the oldest continuously operating US Intelligence service. Naval Intelligence
personnel and products support many customers --- joint warfighter, Navy/Marine Corps operating forces,
national-level agencies, and national decision-makers.

The majority
of Naval Intelligence personnel, civilian and military, are assigned
to the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). ONI is located in the
National Maritime Intelligence Center in Suitland, Maryland, and
is the lead Defense Department production center for maritime-related
intelligence issues. Additional Naval Intelligence personnel are
located in Joint Intelligence Centers, in Cytological Elements and
within Fleet Operations worldwide.
Navy’s Contribution to Intelligence
High quality people are at the core of the success of Naval Intelligence. Naval Intelligence provides maritime intelligence products, services, and systems needed to support Naval warfare on, above and beneath the sea. It is also the principal source for intelligence on global merchant shipping activities and commercial fishing; in particular, to support national objectives in counter-proliferation, counter-narcotics activities, embargo support, and customs enforcement. Naval Intelligence monitors the maritime shipment of goods to identify illicit cargoes of military systems, nuclear material, drugs, and illegal aliens.
The Naval Intelligence experience and technical expertise in analyzing foreign naval weapons, systems, and activities, combined with the operational expertise of its assigned operators and warfare specialists, provide joint and operational commanders worldwide a fully integrated intelligence product that contains what they need, when they need it.
Since 1882, Naval Intelligence has provided the intelligence weapons and professional personnel to sustain the preeminence of United States sea power. As a member of the Naval Intelligence workforce, there are opportunities for challenging positions worldwide. Working for Naval Intelligence presents an exciting challenge and an opportunity to be a part of a team that makes a difference to our National Defense.
