The Office of Management and Budget has extended our authorization to collect data
for the Quarterly Financial Report program through July 31, 2007. This instrument contains the expiration
date of 7/31/2004. Since the report form was re-approved without change, a new instrument will not be
developed so that our resources can be focused on developing a new and improved web-based instrument.
Data after third quarter 2000 are presented on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) basis.
Data prior to fourth quarter 2000 are presented on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system basis.
Comparisons of NAICS-based data to SIC-based data presented in this release are useful only for trends analysis.

The data presented provides up-to-date aggregate statistics on
the financial position of U.S. corporations. Based upon a sample survey, the QFR presents
estimated statements of income and retained earnings, balance sheets, and related financial
and operating ratios for manufacturing corporations with assets of $250,000 and over;
and mining, wholesale trade and retail trade coporations with assets of $50 million and over.
The statistical data are classified by industry and by asset size. This report provides data,
when possible, on distortions in comparability owing to changes in accounting conventions or user needs.
