Jeannette Rankin was born June 11, 1880, near Missoula, Montana. Ms. Rankin served in Congress as a Representative from Montana from 1917 through 1919. She was the first woman to serve in Congress. She ran for the Senate in 1918, but was not elected. She served in Congress again from 1941 through 1943. She did not run for Congress again, but returned to Avalanch Ranch, near Helen, Montana. She associated with members of the Communist Party. In 1967, she was living in Watkinsville, Georgia. Ms. Rankin led a demonstration against the War in Viet Nam in 1968, as part of the "Jeannette Rankin Brigade."
