KPFA radio was incorporated in the State of California on August 24, 1946, as a non-commercial, educational station. Radio Station KPFA, Berkeley, California, received a note from the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), the kidnapers of Patricia Campbell Hearst, advising the station that Ms. Hearst had been found guilty in their courts. Ms. Hearst had been arrested and taken into protective custody by the SLA, but she would be released by them without any harm if the SLA conditions were met. Part of their demand was a symbolic gesture. California was to furnish more than $70.00 worth of food to as many as one million citizens in California. The group's other demand included that their emblem, specific demand's, aims and purposes be made public through the media.
