NAPERVILLE MAN CHARGED WITH BOLINGBROOK BANK ROBBERY

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); David E. Dial, Chief of the Naperville, Illinois Police Department (NPD) and Michael Calcagno, Chief of the Bolingbrook, Illinois Police Department (BPD) announced today the arrest of DANIEL J. SEGAL, age 22, of Naperville, Illinois. SEGAL was arrested Friday afternoon, without incident, by officers of the Naperville Police Department, following the robbery of the National City Bank branch, located at 254 South Weber Road in Bolingbrook .

SEGAL was charged in a criminal complaint filed earlier today in U.S. District Court in Chicago, with one count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, SEGAL entered the National City branch shortly after 10:00 AM, and handed a note to a teller announcing a robbery and demanding cash from her drawer. SEGAL's note stated that he was armed, though no weapon was displayed. After receiving approximately $1,800 in cash, SEGAL exited the bank and fled in a vehicle that was parked nearby.

Investigators from the Bolingbrook Police Department and FBI Special Agents, who responded to the robbery, were able to obtain a detailed description of both SEGAL and his vehicle from witnesses, including a partial license plate number. This description was broadcast over a police radio network, including information linking SEGAL to this robbery.

Several hours later, a NPD patrol unit spotted SEGAL and performed a traffic stop. Inside his vehicle, NPD Officers found items of evidence linking him to the robbery and took SEGAL into custody. SEGAL was subsequently turned over to the FBI and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys, earlier today, at which time he was formally charged. SEGAL was ordered held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charge against him, SEGAL faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years incarceration.

In announcing this arrest, Mr. Kneir wishes to commend the Naperville and Bolingbrook Police Departments for their efforts in apprehending this potentially dangerous individual.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against SEGAL is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
