Chicago Man Arrested Following Morton Grove Bank Robbery

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and George Incledon, Chief of the Morton Grove, Illinois Police Department (MGPD) announced today the arrest of ANTHONY T. WALKER, age 47, a resident of Chicago's south side. WALKER was arrested earlier today by officers of the Morton Grove Police Department, assisted by officers of the Niles and Glenview Police Departments, following both a vehicle and foot chase. WALKER was taken into custody following the robbery of a LaSalle Bank branch, located at 7310 West Dempster in Morton Grove.

WALKER will be charged in a criminal complaint expected to be filed later today in U.S. District Court in Chicago, with one count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense. According to witnesses, WALKER entered the LaSalle Bank branch shortly after 9:00 AM, orally announced a robbery and demanded cash from a teller's drawer. WALKER implied that he was armed and threatened bank employees with harm if his demands were not met. After receiving an as yet undetermined amount of cash, WALKER fled the bank and attempted to escape in a vehicle that he had parked nearby.

A MGPD patrol unit, responding to a robbery alarm at the bank, saw WALKER running from the area and gave chase. He was pursued for several minutes at varying speeds, eventually ending up in neighboring Glenview. Before stopping, WALKER's vehicle struck a tree and several parked cars. After stopping, WALKER jumped from his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, before he was apprehended.

WALKER was subsequently turned over to the FBI and will appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys, later today, at which time he will be formally charged. If convicted of the charge against him, WALKER faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years incarceration.

In announcing this arrest, Mr. Kneir wishes to commend the Morton Grove, Niles and Glenview Police Departments for their efforts in apprehending this potentially dangerous individual.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against WALKER will be available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
