Charges Filed in Robbery of Marquette Bank

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Michael F. Sheahan, Cook County Sheriff, announced today the arrest of GREGORY FOREST, age 43, of 7633 East End in Chicago. FOREST was arrested Tuesday evening, without incident, by CPD Officers from the 21st District, who spotted FOREST while on routine patrol in the vicinity of 37th Street and South Vincennes Avenue.

FOREST was charged in a criminal complaint filed yesterday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of bank robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, FOREST entered the Marquette Bank, located at 4322 South Ashland Avenue, on the morning of May 25th. He approached a teller and announced a robbery, threatening her with harm if his demands were not met. After receiving approximately $1,900 in cash, he fled the bank on foot. Although he claimed to be armed, no weapons were displayed and no injuries were reported.

Subsequent investigation by the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) identified FOREST as the individual believed responsible for this robbery. FOREST is also suspected of involvement in as many as seven other robberies or attempted robberies in Chicago and other Midwestern states. FOREST appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys yesterday afternoon, at which time he was formally charged. Keys ordered FOREST held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charge against him, FOREST faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years incarceration.

The Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the Chicago Police Department and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against FOREST is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
