Murder Suspect Arrested in Indiana

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Michael F. Sheahan, Cook County Sheriff announced today the arrest of MALCOLM A. PACK, age 23, whose last known address was 1730 West Lemoyne in Chicago. PACK was arrested Thursday morning, without incident, at a relative's residence in South Bend, Indiana, by members of the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force, assisted by Detectives from the South Bend Police Department.

PACK was charged in a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one (1) count of Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP), which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, PACK is wanted by the CPD for the January 23, 2004 murder of Chicago resident Eric Cocchia, whose body was found in a parking lot near 1245 North Noble in Chicago. After the UFAP warrant was issued, PACK became the subject of a nationwide manhunt, coordinated by the FBI's VCTF. Investigation by task force members traced PACK to the South Bend address, where he was taken into custody.

PACK is being held without bond, by the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department, pending his extradition to Illinois. The federal UFAP charge against PACK will be dismissed, allowing for his prosecution by local authorities for murder.

The Chicago FBI's VCTF is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the CPD and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Department.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against PACK is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
