Fugitive Attorney Arrested in Texas

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today the arrest of ROBERT G. HERSHENHORN, age 59, formerly of north suburban Wilmette, Illinois. HERSHENHORN has been the subject of a nationwide manhunt since failing to appear for his sentencing hearing, which was scheduled for December 4th of last year, before U.S. District Court Judge John W. Darrah in Chicago. HERSHENHORN was arrested early Saturday morning, without incident, by Officers of the Chambers County, Texas Sheriff's Office, following a routine traffic stop.

HERSHENHORN was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in Chicago in 2003, charged with defrauding several Chicago area banks of over $400,000. He had entered a plea of guilty to the charges and was awaiting sentencing when he fled. He announced his intention to avoid incarceration by becoming a fugitive in a letter written to a female acquaintance.

HERSHENHORN, who recently moved to Coconut Creek, Florida, was a licensed Attorney in the State of Illinois. He was also the owner of two Oak Brook, Illinois based businesses, which the Grand Jury alleged were used to facilitate the fraud. He has been turned over to the FBI in Houston and is scheduled to appear before a U.S. District Court Judge in Houston, later today.

HERSHENHORN will eventually be returned to Chicago for his sentencing.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the indictment filed against HERSHENHORN and the press release issued by the FBI late last year is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
