Two Arrested in Melrose Park Bank Robbery

Kathleen L. McChesney, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced today the arrest of EDDIE R. CARTER, age 29, and MELVIN MILLER, age 40, both of Chicago.  CARTER and MILLER were taken into custody by the FBI, earlier today, following the robbery of the 1st American Bank, located at 2001 North Mannheim Road in Melrose Park, Illinois.

According to witnesses, CARTER entered the bank at approximately 11:00 AM, approached a teller and orally announced a robbery.  He was armed with a handgun, which he used to threaten the teller, though no shots were fired.  After receiving an undetermined amount of cash, CARTER fled the bank and entered a waiting car, allegedly driven by MILLER.  The two then fled the area, heading north on Mannheim Road.

A Cook County Deputy Sheriff's Officer, on routine patrol in that area, was alerted to the robbery via police radio.  A short time later, the Officer spotted the vehicle and gave chase.  According to police reports, MILLER and CARTER refused to stop and continued on for several miles.  Officers from the Melrose Park, Franklin Park and River Grove Police Departments joined in the chase, which ended on Grand Avenue in River Grove, when the robbers were stopped by a police roadblock.

MILLER and CARTER were then arrested, without further incident, and later turned over to the FBI.  They are currently being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago and will be charged tomorrow in a criminal complaint filed in US District Court with one count of bank robbery.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.  This robbery brings the total for the six-county Chicago area to 85 so far this year.
