Australian Man Arrested Following In-Flight Disturbance

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced today the arrest of KEVIN DAVID HOUGHTON, age 31, who is a resident of Melbourne, Australia.  HOUGHTON was arrested by FBI Agents earlier today, without incident, at O'Hare International Airport.  HOUGHTON was a passenger on American Airlines flight 1238, which originated at Los Angeles International Airport with nonstop service to Chicago.

HOUGHTON will be charged in a criminal complaint filed tomorrow in US District Court in Chicago with one count of "Interference with a flight crew," which is a felony offense.  It is alleged that HOUGHTON became intoxicated and unruly during the flight, refusing to comply with flight crew requests.  It is further alleged that HOUGHTON physically assaulted a flight attendant and had to be forced back into his seat.  Several passengers were then enlisted to assist the flight crew in guarding HOUGHTON until the plane touched down in Chicago.

HOUGHTON will be housed overnight at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Chicago, pending his initial court appearance sometime tomorrow.  No injuries were reported during this incident and the cockpit of the plane was not violated.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
