Omaha-Bound Passenger Charged with Weapons Violations

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced today the arrest of SUBASH GURUNG, age 27, of no permanent address in Chicago. GURUNG was arrested by FBI Agents last night, without incident, at O'Hare International Airport. GURUNG was charged earlier Sunday by the Chicago Police department with several misdemeanor charges and was out on bond at the time of his arrest. Subsequent to his being released from local custody, a decision was made to charge GURUNG federally.

GURUNG is scheduled to appear at 2:30 PM today, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Morton Denlow, on the 13th Floor of the Dirksen Federal Courthouse, 219 South Dearborn Street.

GURUNG will be charged in a criminal complaint filed in U. S. District Court with one (1) count of attempting to carry a weapon on an aircraft, which is a felony. It is alleged that GURUNG attempted to board United Airlines flight #1085 from Chicago to Omaha, Saturday evening, with several knives and a can of chemical spray.

There is no allegation that this incident involves any suspected terrorist activity. Additionally, published reports indicating that GURUNG shared a common address with alleged terrorist suspects is not accurate.

If convicted, GURUNG faces a maximum of 10 years incarceration and a $250,000 fine. The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
