New York Man Charged with Interstate Theft

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today the arrest of CURTIS W. SMITH, age 40, of Huntington, New York. SMITH was arrested by FBI Agents, without incident, Wednesday, November 21st, after being charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one (1) count of Theft From an Interstate Shipment (TFIS).

According to the complaint, SMITH, who is an over the road driver for Hirschbach Trucking Company in South Sioux City, Iowa, left New York State November 3rd with a load of Hasbro Toys en route to a Walmart distribution center in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. SMITH and the load of toys, valued in excess of $40,000, never arrived and were reported missing on November 7th. Subsequent investigation discovered that SMITH had stopped in Chicago and was attempting to sell the toys to local residents at flea markets and door-to-door.

SMITH appeared in U.S. District Court in Chicago, earlier today, and was ordered held without bond pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted, SMITH faces a maximum penalty of up to ten (10) years in prison.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
