Harvey Man Charged with Homewood Bank Robbery

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced today the arrest of STEVEN J. CATES, age 31, of Harvey, Illinois. CATES was taken into custody by FBI Agents last night, following the attempted robbery of the Citizens Financial Services Bank, 18300 South Western Avenue in Homewood.

CATES was charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, earlier today, with one count of attempted bank robbery. According to the complaint, CATES approached a teller in the bank yesterday afternoon, announced a robbery and demanded money from her drawer. The teller recognized CATES from a previous robbery of the bank, activated an alarm and refused to comply with his demand. CATES then fled the bank empty handed, but was arrested outside by responding Homewood Police Officers.

No injuries were reported during either the attempted robbery or subsequent arrest of CATES. Following his appearance in U.S. District Court today, CATES was ordered held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance. SAC Kneir would like to recognize the swift and professional response of the Homewood Police Department in helping to solve this crime.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
