Kidnapping Suspect Shot

Kathleen L. McChesney, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced today the arrest of SAMUEL G. PEEPLES, of Chicago. PEEPLES was arrested by members of the FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF), late last night, for Assaulting a Federal Officer.

At approximately 10:00 P.M., VCTF members were assisting Chicago Police Detectives from Area 1 with an investigation into the kidnapping of a 17 year-old Chicago youth. As part of this investigation, a ransom drop was made in the vicinity of 55th Street and South Carpenter. An individual subsequently identified as PEEPLES attempted to retrieve the ransom and flee the area. He was confronted by VCTF members and Chicago Police Detectives, who attempted to place him under arrest. PEEPLES was armed with a Tech-9 pistol, which he pointed at the arresting Agents and Officers. Before he could fire his weapon, PEEPLES was shot twice by an FBI Agent, sustaining wounds to his wrist and hip.

PEEPLES was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is in stable condition and remains under FBI guard. PEEPLES is expected to be charged in a criminal complaint filed later today in U.S. District Court in Chicago with Assaulting a Federal Officer. His initial court appearance remains unscheduled.

Following the shooting, the kidnapping victim was released unharmed. Several arrested have been made in connection with this kidnapping by the Chicago Police Department, who should be contacted for additional information. No other injuries were reported.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
