Twenty Second Robber Arrested

Kathleen L. McChesney, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Terry G. Hillard, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) announced today the arrest of DARRELL A. BAKER, age 40, of Brookfield, Illinois. BAKER is suspected of being a serial bank robber dubbed the "Twenty Second Robber," responsible for the robbery of at least four (4) Chicago banks, dating to mid-March of this year.

BAKER was arrested by CPD Officers earlier this afternoon, following the robbery of the Second Federal Savings Bank, 3960 West 26th Street. According to witnesses, BAKER entered the bank at approximately 1:00 P.M., approached a teller and handed her a note demanding money. As was his practice in past robberies, BAKER's note implied that he was armed and gave the teller 20 seconds to comply with his demand. After receiving as as of yet undetermined amount of cash, BAKER fled the bank on foot. Although his note implied that he was armed, no weapon was displayed.

Witnesses observed BAKER flee and notified responding CPD Officers, who were able to locate and apprehend him, without incident, in the 2500 block of South Harding. BAKER will be taken into custody by the FBI later today and will be charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, with one count of bank robbery.

BAKER is also suspected of the April 9th robbery of the Mid America Bank branch, 5075 Archer; the March 27th robbery of the Labe Bank, 4343 North Elston; and the March 18th robbery of the TCF Bank branch, 5320 South Pulaski. No injuries were reported in any of these robberies.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
