Local FBI Chief to Head Training Academy

FBI Director Louis J. Freeh has announced the appointment of Kathleen L. McChesney, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago FBI, to the position of Assistant Director in charge of training. Ms. McChesney will be based at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Ms. McChesney, age 50, is a 23-year veteran of the FBI and was among the first women appointed to the Special Agent position in the mid-1970's. She has risen steadily through the ranks after beginning her career as a field agent in Seattle. She has held management positions in Los Angeles, Portland, Detroit and at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. As Special Agent in Charge in Portland, she was only the second woman to head an FBI field office. Ms. McChesney holds a Master's Degree and a PhD in Public Administration.

At the FBI Academy, Ms. McChesney will be responsible for all training programs for FBI personnel, as well as training provided to U.S. and international law enforcement officers. Programs include new Agents training, the National Academy for state and local police managers, international training and oversight of the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary. Last year, more than 18,000 criminal justice personnel were trained at the FBI Academy.

"Kathleen McChesney has distinguished herself in a variety of assignments," said Freeh. "As an investigator, program manager and twice as head of a field office, Kathleen has demonstrated success at every level. She is an innovator with vision for the future, which makes her extremely well-suited to lead one of the most important divisions in the FBI," Freeh said.

The FBI has 14 Assistant Directors - eleven who head divisions at FBI Headquarters and three who head filed offices in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. The Assistant Directory position is the third-highest in the FBI after the Directory and Deputy Director. Ms. McChesney is expected to remain in charge of the Chicago office through August.
