As detailed in Director Freeh's announcement, the FBI will attempt to hire at least 800 new Special Agents during the first nine months of this year. This hiring initiative, one of the largest in the history of the FBI, will bring the total number of FBI Special Agents to nearly 12,000.

All educational majors and employment backgrounds will be considered, although applicants with certain foreign language skills and/or accounting, engineering, computer and science degrees are most desirable.

Applicants for the Special Agent position must be in excellent physical condition and be willing to relocate throughout the U.S. Successful applicants will receive four months of extensive training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Areas of study include firearms training, physical fitness and defensive tactics, and the classroom study of law, forensics, interviewing and related topics.
