"Night Stalker" Suspect Arrested

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Terry G. Hillard, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) announced today the arrest of DWIGHT LEWIS, age 29, of Chicago, Illinois. LEWIS is believed to be the "Night Stalker Bandit", responsible for the robbery of as many as eight TCF and LaSalle Bank branches in the Chicago area, during the past six weeks.

LEWIS was taken into Federal custody late Saturday, following the robbery, earlier in the day, of a LaSalle Bank branch located at 5279 Lincoln Avenue in Skokie, Illinois. During this robbery, an individual believed to be LEWIS robbed the bank of approximately $4500. According to witnesses, LEWIS approached a teller and handed her a note, announcing a robbery and demanding cash. The note also claimed that he was armed, though no weapon was displayed and no injuries were reported.

Several hours after the Skokie robbery, Chicago Police Officers, on routine patrol, spotted LEWIS driving in the 5700 block of North Sheridan Road. He was arrested for driving without a license and for an outstanding warrant for failure to appear. Subsequent investigation by the CPD and FBI developed evidence, linking LEWIS to the Saturday robbery.

LEWIS will be charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, later today, with one count of bank robbery. He is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sidney Shcenkier at 3:30 PM. Investigation by the FBI is continuing in a effort to link LEWIS to the other robberies.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Editors Note: A complete listing of the Night Stalker's suspected robberies is attached. A copy of the criminal complaint filed against LEWIS will be available following his court appearance later today.
