Columbian Nationals Arrested

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today the arrest of MARIO FERNANDO RIVERA-GALVEZ, age 24, and ALEXANDER CLAVIJO-LOZANO, age 31, both of Cali, Columbia. GALVEZ and LOZANO were arrested by FBI Agents Friday evening, without incident, after arriving at Chicago's Midway Airport on a Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta, Georgia.

Both men were charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with possession of a controlled substance (heroin) with intent to distribute. According to the complaint, GALVEZ and LOZANO were found to have ingested over 200 packets of heroin, with a total weight in excess of 1700 grams. It is believe that heroin was destined for distribution in the Chicago area.

Both men appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan yesterday and were ordered held without bond, pending their next scheduled court appearance. If convicted, GALVEZ and LOZANO face a mandatory sentence of 10 years incarceration.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
