FBI Statement

Kathleen L. McChesney, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is providing the following information regarding the shooting and hostage situation that occurred earlier today.

At approximately 10:00 A.M., members of the Chicago FBI's Fugitive and Violent Crime Task Forces attempted to arrest DANIEL E. SALLEY, age 41, who was visiting a friend at her apartment, located at 1307 South Wabash in Chicago.  SALLEY was wanted for the August 24th robbery of a Charter One Bank branch, located inside a Dominick's Food Store at 3250 West 87th Street in Chicago.  A criminal complaint charging SALLEY with this robbery was filed in US District Court in Chicago on August 27th.

As Task Force members confronted SALLEY and attempted to place him under arrest, he retrieved a weapon from inside his friend's apartment and exchanged gunfire with Task Force members.  During this exchange, a Task Force member was wounded, as was SALLEY.  The wounded Task Force Officer collapsed in the apartment and was held hostage by SALLEY for approximately two (2) hours.  SALLEY eventually surrendered to Task Force Members and was taken into custody.

The wounded Task Force Member, who is a sworn Chicago Police Officer, was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is being treated for his wounds.  SALLEY was transported to Cook County Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

A copy of the complaint charging SALLEY with the August 24th bank robbery is available from the Chicago FBI press office.  It is also anticipated that SALLEY will be charged, later today, with Assaulting a Federal Officer.  The FBI's Violent Crime Task Force is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Chicago Police Detectives and Cook County Sheriff's Police Officers.  The FBI's Fugitive Task Force is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Chicago Police Detectives, Cook County Sheriff's Police Officers, a Deputy US Marshall and a Special Agent from the US Secret Service.

Questions about the wounded officer's condition should be directed to the Chicago Police Department, Public Affairs Office, at (312) 745-6110.  An extensive post-incident shooting investigation will be conducted by the FBI and Chicago Police Department.  No additional information about the arrest will be available until completion of this investigation.
