April 26, 2001 Mexican Attorney General Concludes Chicago Visit RAFAEL MACDEO-DE LA CONCHA, Attorney General of Mexico, recently concluded a two day visit to Chicago. The purpose of DE LA CONCHA's trip was to meet with U.S. Law Enforcement officials and discuss with them his government's role in combating the flow of illegal drugs in to the United States from Mexico. On Tuesday, April 24th, DE LA CONCHA was the keynote speaker at the SOUTHWEST BORDER INITIATIVE conference, which was being held in Chicago. DE LA CONCHA addressed senior officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and United States Customs Service (USCS), re-affirming his country's support of joint efforts to identify and dismantle organized crime groups operating between Mexico and the United States that are involved in drug trafficking, money laundering and other organized criminal activity. DE LA CONCHA was appointed Attorney General in December of 2000 by Mexican President VINCENTE FOX and is the first Mexican Attorney General to visit Chicago. The SOUTHWEST BORDER INITIATIVE was established in 1994 to coordinate investigative efforts of the FBI, DEA and USCS in combating polydrug organizations, which impact the southwest border of the U.S. and transshipment points, such as Chicago.
