"
I Was a Communist for the FBI" was the name of a series
of stories that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post by Matt
Cvetic. The Bureau was contacted by Warner Brothers movie
studio and told of their purchase of the project, and that
they were going to make a movie about the stories. They asked
for the FBI's cooperation, but Director Hoover advised Bureau
Headquarters and Field Office employees against cooperating.
When the movie was released, the studio gave a reception in
each city. They invited the Special Agent in Charge (SAC)
in the cities to appear. The Bureau advised the SAC's not
to attend, as it would make it seem that the FBI approved
and cooperated in the making of the movie. Many of the theaters
would contact the FBI wanting pictures and other items for
display when they showed the movie. It was also made into
a radio program that ran for 52 weeks on the stations.
