Clark Street Robber Strikes Three more Banks; Total now at 15

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Terry G. Hillard, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) are again asking for the public's help in identifying the individual depicted in the attached photograph, who is believed responsible for the robbery or attempted robbery of 15 Chicago and neighboring suburban banks during the past month.

Dubbed the "Clark Street Robber" as his initial thefts were all from banks located on or near north Clark street in Chicago, he has expanded his area of operation in recent weeks to include banks in Evanston and Lincolnwood. His most recent robberies occurred on Saturday, September 14 and Monday, September 16.

In yesterday's theft, a First American Bank branch located at 1345 West Diversey Parkway in Chicago was robbed of an undetermined amount of cash, shortly before noon. After entering the bank, the robber approached a teller and handed her a note demanding money. Although he implied that he was armed, no weapon was displayed and no injuries were reported. He escaped on foot, last direction of travel not observed.

On Saturday, the same individual escaped with an undetermined amount of money from the North Community Bank branch, located at 742 West Diversey Parkway in Chicago. After entering the bank and approaching a teller, he handed her a note demanding money. Earlier that day, he had attempted to rob the Great Bank, located at 4725 North Western in Chicago, but was unsuccessful. Upon reading his note announcing a robbery, the teller apparently froze causing the robber to flee the bank empty handed. No injuries were reported in either robbery, which are being investigated by the FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force.

Witnesses have described the "Clark Street Robber" as a black/male, 30-35 years of age, 5'10" - 6'2" tall, thin build, black hair, brown eyes with a thin mustache.

A complete listing of the "Clark Street Robber's" thefts are attached. Anyone recognizing the individual depicted in the attached bank surveillance photograph or having information about any of these robberies is asked to call the FBI at (312) 431-1333.

EDITOR's NOTE: Additional copies of the attached photos are available from the Chicago FBI Press Office, either by E-mail or courier pick-up, by calling (312) 786-2645.
