Loop Bank Robber Arrested

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Terry G. Hillard, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Michael F. Sheehan, Cook County Sheriff, announced today the arrest of MICHAEL RICHARDSON, age 29, whose last known address was 1634 Harbor Avenue in Calumet City. RICHARDSON was arrested by CPD Officers late yesterday afternoon, following the robbery of a TCF Bank branch located at 120 South Riverside Plaza near the downtown Chicago area.

RICHARDSON was turned over to the FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) late last night and was charged in a criminal complaint filed today in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of bank robbery. The VCTF is comprised of FBI Special Agents and Detectives from the CPD and Cook County Sheriff's Office.

According to the complaint, RICHARDSON entered the TCF Bank branch at approximately 3:30 PM, approached a teller and handed her a note demanding money. RICHARDSON claimed that he was armed, though no weapon was displayed and no injuries were reported. Included in the money given to RICHARDSON was a security "dye pack", which activated shortly after he left the bank, covering RICHARDSON with red dye. CPD Officers responding to a robbery call at the bank noticed RICHARDSON running east on Monroe Street and gave chase. He was apprehended in a parking garage several blocks away at 325 South Franklin.

RICHARDSON appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Geraldine Soat Brown this morning and was ordered held without bond pending his next scheduled court appearance.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed in this case is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
