May 8, 2002 California Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested Thomas J, Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Patrick Carey, Chief of the Libertyville, Illinois Police Department, announced today the arrest of THOMAS L. JUSTICE, age 31, a resident of Chicago. JUSTICE was arrested by Libertyville Police Officers yesterday afternoon, without incident, in the vicinity of 155 West Peterson Road in Libertyville. JUSTICE was wanted by the FBI in San Francisco for the March 7, 2002 robbery of the Union Bank, located at 1555 Mt. Diablo Boulevard in Walnut Creek, California. According to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, after robbing the bank of approximately $5100, JUSTICE was able to elude responding Police Officers on a racing bicycle and on foot. JUSTICE was living in nearby Berkeley, California at the time, but is believed to have fled the area immediately after the robbery, returning to the Chicago area. Aware that JUSTICE might visit his parents who reside in Libertyville, Officers from the Libertyville Police Department spotted JUSTICE as he left the residence, stopping him several blocks later. After being turned over to the FBI, JUSTICE appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael T. Mason in Chicago, who ordered him held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance. Investigation is also being conducted by the Chicago FBI, to determine if JUSTICE was involved in the robbery of as many as 10 northwest suburban banks during the fall of 2000. The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. |
