FBI Joins Hunt for Fugitive Priest

Thomas J Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today that the FBI has joined in the hunt for SLEEVA RAJU POLICETTI, a Catholic priest from the Archdiocese of Chicago, who is wanted by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) for the sexual assault of a minor.

A criminal complaint charging POLICETTI with Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution (UFAP) was filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, earlier today. The complaint alleges that POLICETTI fled the State of Illinois on or about May 6th, in an attempt to avoid arrest by the CPD for the sexual assault charge. It is believed that POLICETTI returned to his native India.

Anyone having information on the whereabouts of POLICETTI is asked to call the FBI at (312) 431-1333.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A copy of the criminal complaint filed in this case is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
