Fugitive in Hanhardt Case Arrested in Virginia

Thomas J. Kneir, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Van A. Harp, Assistant Director in Charge of the Washington Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today the arrest of WILLIAM ROBERT BROWN, age 76. BROWN was arrested earlier this morning, without incident, in Woodbridge, Virginia by FBI agents from the FBI's Washington Field Office.

In October 2000, BROWN was charged in a Federal Grand Jury indictment in Chicago with a violation of Federal Law in connection with an interstate jewelry theft ring that operated out of Chicago. BROWN was also wanted by the FBI in Phoenix for a federal firearms violation.

BROWN is currently in federal custody in Alexandria, Virginia. He is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Alexandria before U.S. Magistrate Barry Poretz on Friday.

The public is reminded an indictment is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
